I was at the Loch Raven Reservoir trail access meeting Thursday night held by MORE. Having ridden Loch Raven with my son many times last summer, I’ve been following this since last December. The mountain biking community is in danger of losing this fight. If the representatives from Baltimore DPW who were in attendance are typical of their city’s government then we’re screwed. Lies, misinformation and stonewalling were the order of the day. They claim that mountain biking is ruining the water quality at the reservoir thru sedimentation in spite of their own documents which indicate otherwise. Losing access at Loch Raven is a concern to all of us, even those who have never ridden there. Every time bureaucrats with an ax to grind ban mountain bikers they’re writing the blueprint for the next scoundrel who wants to do the same. When riders are kicked out there they will seek other places to ride and the Lakes are not that far away. I’m not trying to be greedy or xenophobic but a large influx of riders from out of the area will put a strain on the trails and our ability to maintain them. I urge you, even if you’re not interested in riding there please do whatever you can, at least sign the petition. Below is the link to the Loch Raven Trail Access website which links to the petition, the MORE/IMBA trail plan and a variety of resources to help maintain trail access.
