Hey everyone...

Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 9th for the 2nd Annual Revenge of the Dark Side Mountain Bike Time Trial in memory of our friend Jon Gantz at Lake Redman. We are looking to make this bigger and better this year with more events and swag so mark your calendars. More details will follow in the coming weeks. As with last year, a cookout will follow the actual race.

The course will remain Top Secret until the morning of race day but make sure you practice it forward, backward, up, down and don't forget our side loop on Trail# 7. It might be a good idea to hit that too  Here's some more details for those of you who think you are worthy to attempt this nightmare!

When: Sunday October 9th, 2011

Where: Meet at the Bass Pavilion at the Lake Redman Boat Launch Parking Area

Time: Registration opens at 9:00A.M.

Cost: $0.00 - No entry fee but you must be a paid-up YAMBA member by 9/24/2011

Free food and the possibility to pick up some cool swag back at the Pavilion after the race.

What’s Up??? The Revenge of the Dark Side is a Mountain Bike Time Trial on Trail# 7 at Lake Redman. Trail# 7 is often referred to as the Dark Side by local riders. There will be a prologue climb to get to the trail head of “The Dark Side”, but the actual Time Trial course and direction will not be disclosed until 10/9. The first racer leaves at 11:00A.M. and everyone else follows in one minute intervals.

The Extra Stuff: In the spirit of Halloween, racers are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite Halloween attire. Costumes are NOT mandatory but those who choose to participate will be given a Time Bonus based on the originality of his/her costume. The fastest male and female racers will have enough bragging rights to last them a year and will be dubbed “The Prince and The Princess of the Dark Side”!

Hello YAMBA friends and members,

Time is counting down to our 2nd annual Revenge of the Dark Side mountain bike time trial to be held Sunday, October 9th. We are still making final plans but wanted to update you on some more specifics about the day.

As always, the event in is memory of our friend Jon Gantz who, along with his brother and two friends, passed away in 2004 as a result of an automobile accident. We celebrate Jon's love of mountain bike racing as well as his dedication and hard work on behalf of YAMBA.

The course will remain Top Secret until the morning of race day but as the name implies, the majority of the race will take place on Trail 7 at William H. Kain County Park - otherwise known as the Dark Side. Those of you familiar with the trails at the Lakes know this is a challenging trail. This year, we are breaking up the race into two classes -- beginner and expert. The expert course will differ slightly from the beginner course but both courses will be both challenging and fun. Since this is a time trial, it is perfect for first time racers -- come out and give it a try against the clock! Cash prizes will be offered for first, second, and third place in both classes!!!

In the spirit of Halloween, racers are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite Halloween attire. Costumes are not mandatory but those who choose to participate will be given a time bonus based on the originality of his or her costume.

This year, Skip is bringing back the "Wheel of Swag". We have a bunch of bike gear and other goodies to raffle. Anyone can purchase a spoke on the "Wheel of Swag" for the chance to pick up something cool from the swag table. The swag raffle will take place during our free picnic lunch back at the Bass Pavilion at the Lake Redman Boat Launch parking lot. Total cash and prizes for this year's event will total almost $1500!

After lunch at approximately 2pm, we will participate in the International Mountain Bike Association's Take A Kid Mountain Biking event. All children ages 6 through 18 are invited to attend. Children under the age of 12 must have an adult present who will participate in the event. Kids will be given the opportunity to try mountain biking in the dirt, rocks, and roots and also practice their balance skills on some "skinnies" set up in the grass by the Pavilion. All participants should have their own mountain bike and helmet (mandatory). The length of the ride will be a minimum of one mile or longer depending on the age and skill level of those that attend.

Come out on Sunday, October 9th to watch the race, enjoy some free food, and let the kids give mountain biking a try!

YAMBA could use a few more volunteers to assist with the time trial tomorrow. If you are not racing and are interested in helping with the event and attending the cookout, please come over to the Bass Pavilion at the Lake Redman Boat Launch parking area by 9am.

Thanks!

YAMBA would like to thank those that came out to both participate and assist with the Revenge of the Dark Side and IMBA Take A Kid Mountain Biking events last weekend and show your support for the club. While we had a smaller than expected turnout, everyone had a great time and most picked up some pretty cool swag. Thank you especially to John and Berit Gantz for their continued support of the club and our events in memory of their son Jon. Thank you also to our sponsors Whistle Stop Bike Shop, The Bike Shak, and Cycle Works.

We had 4 Expert Riders:
1. Mitch Nye - 34:23
2. Tim Messersmith - 35:27
3. Joseph Gordon - 35:58
4. Dave Pugh - 41:41

We had 5 Beginner Riders:
1. Ken Powers - 26:53
2. Retzer Cariaga - 27:01
3. Markus Houser - 28:04
4. Alyssa Mease - 32:34
5. Dusty Gordon - 38:55

Next on the agenda is a very large trail project at Rocky Ridge to reroute the eroded section of trail 3 in the back of the park. We could use all the help we can get so come out and help build a great new trail at Rocky Ridge!
