IMBA Trail Care Crew is coming to York!!!

Postby danwalko » Thu Apr 08, 2010 6:14 pm

The club received great news today. YAMBA has been chosen to receive a visit from the IMBA Trail Care Crew in 2010! This is a great opportunity for IMBA to teach us more about trail building and then assist us with an actual project. This will likely happen in October, 2010. More details to follow! :D

IMBA Trail Care Crew - 10/1 to 10/3

Postby danwalko » Fri Jul 09, 2010 10:00 am

Hey everyone....

We are starting to make plans for the IMBA Trail Care Crew visit in October. Right now....here is a tentative outline of what will be happening that weekend. We are looking for as many members as possible to participate in this event. Stay posted for more info to follow as we finalize the details.

Friday, October 1, morning, and that afternoon if necessary, would be the trail layout. Tentatively, it looks like we'll be doing a trail relocation project at Lake Redman. We just scoped out one area this past Thursday, but it would be too large of a project to take on for that weekend. This other trail relocation project is better suited but we want to get out and scout it out as well just to be sure.

Friday night, October 1, we are planning a social event with some pizza and then head out for a night ride on the moonlit trails at Lake Redman.

Saturday morning, October 2 -- we have the education center at Nixon County park reserved for the training seminar. The Parks most likely will be providing Lunch for everyone. From there, we'll head out to build some new trail!!! This will be an all day event.

Sunday morning, October 3, will probably be either another short work day to finish whatever we did not get done Saturday afternoon or we'll head out for a ride. I was thinking a ride encompassing both Lake Redman, Lake Williams and Spring Valley County Park if the TCC have time.

More details will follow as we finalize the plans.

The IMBA Trail Care Crew visit is getting closer! We really need to have an accurate head count of who will be attending. We are asking that everyone who will be attending, please use the link at the top of the page, just under the header, titled IMBA TCC Registration. Fill out the forms and let us know which of the events you will be attending.

The form is very simple to complete. This way we know who is coming to what so we can plan for the food/tools/etc.

Thank you.

Jody, we should be over at the Ironstone Hill parking lot, the one at the metal grate bridge, somewhere around 1230ish. Lunch is to start at 11 I believe so depending on that we may be at the lot a little earlier or later.

Hey everyone....

The rains predicted for all day Thursday are sort of messing up our plans for the TCC visit. Will wait to see how much rain we actually get but for now...

Thursday evening group ride at RR is definitely canceled.

It is not looking good for the night ride on Friday at the Lakes due to the heavy rains expected. The trails will likely be closed. For those not working on Friday...we may move the ride to RR in the afternoon. Check back tomorrow or early Friday for final details.

It just figures that it hasn't rained in months and now that the TCC visit is here....we are making up for 3 months of drought!

Saturday TCC instruction at Nixon Park and then trailwork in the afternoon is still ON! Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

Check back for more info later.

Hey everyone,

As luck would have it (bad luck that is), the seemingly never ending rain has caused a slight change of our plans.

The night ride we had planned for tonight 10/01 at Lake Redman has been cancelled. The Good news is that we are still planning to meet tonight at Mamma's Pizza in Loganville to give everyone an opportunity to meet Chris and Leslie from the IMBA Trail Care Crew. We have moved the meeting time to 7:00P.M., so we hope you will come out and join us and take the opportunity to chat it up with our friends from IMBA!

Saturday 10/02 is still a 100% GO with everyone meeting at Nixon County Park at 8:00A.M. for the trail buidling seminar, followed by Lunch provided by the York County Parks and then out to the trails we head to build a new section of sweet singletrack - Don't miss out on this opportunity!

See ya tonight at Mamma's Pizza!

The IMBA Trail Care Crew is in town and we have an involved & lengthy project for tomorrow's Trail Work day. I am "rallying the troops" and trying to recruit some additional YAMBA members to help at 12:30P.M. tomorrow with the actual trail construction. We are meeting at 12:30P.M. at the Ironstone Hill Road parking at Lake Redman if you can make it, so if you have been wanting to help out but just haven't been able to commit then tomorrow afternoon is the time to come out and join us!!!

See ya on the trails,

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who made yesterday's session possible. It was a great experience that I learned a lot from and hope to use for years to come with trail building...

Thank you to everyone who came out this weekend and made the IMBA Trail Care Crew visit to York a big success! We had about 33 people come out to build some sweet new singletrack at Lake Redman! Here are some photos from the weekend:

Wow! That was a great weekend! Even with the weather not cooperating on Sunday and the Subaru/IMBA TCC, Chris and Leslie, team having to leave early on Saturday we were able to make the most of the weekend and got nearly 1800 ft of trail flagged and then probably close to 900 feet dug.

On Friday a few members of the trail committee met with the Subaru/IMBA TCC team to flag out the new section of trail, to be named "Copperhead" b/c of the copperhead snake seen while scouting the trail. This was a large task, much larger than that normally undertaken by the TCC, they normally work on projects about 600 to at the most 1000 feet in lenght. Ours would be pushing 2000 ft of new trail. Once our entry, exit, and turn points, along with grade were established flagging went quickly. All in all we were out for 5 hours scouting and flagging Friday morning/afternoon. I took pride in the fact that the TCC validated the rough flagging, agreeing that the turn location was at the best place and used appropriate control points, and then when shooting grade, they came within 10 feet of all my rough flags. Still, the use of the clinometer and the excellent eyes of Chris and Leslie, did put the trail in a more sustainable and fun position.

After flagging and a quick break for lunch we headed up to Rocky RIdge to ride and pick the brains of Chris and Leslie. They gave me and the other members of the trail committee great tips, harsh but necessary criticism, and praise all in one ride. It was a great learning experience for us and them.

Saturday morning 26 individuals woke up early and made the trip to Nixon Park to attend the seminar on trailbuilding that the Subaru/IMBA TCC put on. The classroom session lasted 3.5 hours. The Parks provided lunch and we filled up on fuel before heading over the The Lakes to begin work on the Airplane Hill reroute. We lost a few volunteers from the class, but gained even more that were waiting in the parking lot to help build the new trail. Chris gave a quick saftey talk and then Leslie did a demo on proper bench cut technique. Bench cutting was the project for the day, some areas required a 12 inch or more bench to properly put in the trail. Most of the crew worked for about 4 hours with a few of us sticking around for an additional hour. All in all "Copperhead" was nearly 50% completed in the afternoon due to the hard work of all those that come out.

Thank you so much to Subara and IMBA for creating and keeping the TCC crews on the road. To Chris and Leslie for the great instruction, tips, pointers, and work that they put in and gave us over the weekend. And especially to all of the local volunteers that made this a wonderful weekend:

Dan Walko, Mike Major, Jan Wagner, Nathan Wagner, Linda Reider, Markus Houser, Paul Heller, James Gable, Tony Marano, Erik Johnson, Dan Hoffman, Susan Moury, John Funkhouser, Will Weismantel, Alyssa Mease, Scott Ramsay, Charles Smith, Angie Smith, Joel Dore, Kim Watson, Jim Kraft, Dan Bowers, Pete Wallace, Mike Fobes, Skip Durgin, Ray Michels, Patti Chamberlin, Erice Grove, Larry Schlaline, Haavard Bohinen, Jody Coeyman, Victor Bosley, Sherry Bosley, Gunther ?.
